Secrets of the Hive - Beekeeping Class
Bee's are fascinating and there is so much to teach and learn about, their societies are complex and their lives are short, but oh so sweet. These insects are sure to inspire you, as you learn secrets of the hive. Learn the lifecycle of flowering plants and bees, as they have a fascinating relationship to our lifecycle as well. Taught from a scientific view, with aspects of art and sustainability highlighted.
Students of Jane @ Science Discovery, Secrets of the Hive Class 2009.
Phase 1: Introduction and Theory
Participants will explore the theory and practice of:
- History and Importance of Beekeeping
- Technical aspects to Beekeeping
Types of Hives (natural, box, bar)
Supplies (hive tools, suites and protective gear)
- Biology of the Honey Bee [Apis mellifera L.]
Lifecycle (plants, and bees)
Pollination (flowers, nectar, and honey production)
Disease (mites, foulbrood, (CCD) Colony Collapse Disorder)
- Culture Bees/Beekeepers
Bee Society (communication, Jobs, waggle dance)
Apiaries (importance of the bee, queen capturing, splitting hives)
Cultivation (honey, wax and propolis)
- Science Observation/Data
NASA Honey BeeNet (data collection, hive scales, data analysis)
Phase 2: Practical Experience: Exploring a wild hive, and two established Science Discovery Colonies, explorers of the hive will get hands on experience with bee's. Bee suites are provided, and students are encouraged to bring their own rubber rain boots if they have them.
Students will also have an opportunity to visit a local Beekeeper in Action. Wyatt of Red Wagon Organic Farms, currently the only local producer of queen bees in Boulder, CO, will share some of his queen bee techniques with students during our field trip to his Farm. Students will get to explore several different hives, and learn about splitting colonies, and capturing queens.
